Jordan – Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea and the land of the Bedouins

Jordan

Jordan is one of the most surprising countries in the Middle East. Deserts that look like the surface of Mars, ancient cities carved into rock, the turquoise waters of the Dead Sea and the hospitality of the people make it easy to feel as if you’ve landed on another planet.

Travelling around Jordan

The most convenient way to explore the country is by renting a car. Outside Amman, driving is pleasant, the roads are good and traffic is much calmer than in the capital. Road rules differ from those in Europe, so caution is advised, but the atmosphere on the road is generally friendly.

Madaba – a city of religious harmony

Madaba is a great first stop on a journey through Jordan. It is famous for its mosaics and for the close coexistence of churches and mosques, which perfectly reflects the country’s tolerant spirit.

Petra – the city carved in stone

Petra is undoubtedly Jordan’s most important attraction.

  • monumental structures carved into rose-red rock,
  • kilometres of walking routes,
  • it’s best to plan at least two days here,
  • a passport is required for entry.

In Petra you will meet Bedouins in traditional dress – with dark eyes lined with kohl, long hair and distinctive cloaks.

Sleeping in a bubble or in a cave

Near Petra you’ll find Bubble Luxotel Petra, offering overnight stays in transparent bubbles under the stars. In the area you can also stay in real Bedouin caves – an unforgettable experience, especially at night when the desert becomes completely silent.

The Dead Sea – floating on water

The Dead Sea is actually a lake with an extremely high salt content.

  • swimming is impossible – your body is pushed to the surface,
  • there is no biological life in the water,
  • the best access is from hotels on the northern shore,
  • spa treatments using mineral-rich black mud are very popular.

Wadi Rum – a desert like Mars

The Wadi Rum desert in southern Jordan captivates with its red sand, monumental rock formations and silence. It is one of the most spectacular places in the entire country.

Aqaba – the Red Sea

Aqaba lies on the Red Sea and is famous for its coral reefs and excellent conditions for diving and snorkelling.

Ajloun – a medieval castle

Ajloun Castle is an impressive fortress in northern Jordan, offering views over the green hills of the region.

Wadi Mujib – a water-filled canyon

Wadi Mujib is a gorge where you hike through rocks, waterfalls and riverbeds. The trail is open only in the warm season – in winter it is often closed for safety reasons.

Jordan is an extraordinary country – from desert landscapes and ancient cities to the relaxing waters of the Dead Sea. It is a place that stays with you long after you return home.
