Santorini is one of the most recognisable Greek islands – set on a sea-flooded volcanic crater. Together with the surrounding islets it forms a caldera, with an active, though currently dormant, volcano with sulphur hot springs at its centre.
The volcano and hot springs
In the middle of the caldera you can reach the sulphur hot springs by boat.
- the water has a strong sulphur smell,
- bathing leaves permanent stains on light clothes and jewellery – it’s best not to take them with you.
The landscape of Santorini
Santorini fascinates with contrasts:
- towering cliffs rising straight from the sea,
- bands of rock in different colours – from white to deep black and red,
- the iconic white-and-blue architecture of towns perched on the rim of the caldera.
Beaches – red, white and black
The island is famous for its volcanic beaches:
- Red Beach – accessible on foot,
- White Beach – usually reachable only from the sea,
- Black Beach – black volcanic sand and pebbly coves.
Getting around – ATV
The most popular way to get around Santorini is by quad (ATV). It allows for flexible exploration, but traffic can be chaotic – narrow roads, large buses and aggressive manoeuvres require great caution.
Oia – the mythical sunset
Oia is considered one of the best places in the world to watch the sunset, but in high season it becomes extremely crowded. Similar views can be found in other, quieter parts of the island.
Ammoudi – the bay below Oia
Below the cliffs of Oia lies the small rocky bay of Ammoudi – turquoise water, black and red rocks and white buildings towering above create one of Santorini’s most photogenic scenes.
Imerovigli – a quieter base
Imerovigli is a cliff-top town, much calmer than Oia or Fira, and an ideal place to stay with views over the caldera.
Fira (Thera)
The island’s capital – lively, with many restaurants, shops and viewpoints.
No forests – a different character
Santorini has virtually no forests. Its raw volcanic scenery is part of its unique identity.
Exploring from the sea
You can rent a boat and discover Santorini from the water – the best way to reach White Beach and to admire the cliffs from a completely different perspective.
Pyrgos and Megalochori
Two less touristy towns:
- Pyrgos – traditional architecture and panoramic views over the whole island,
- Megalochori – peaceful, authentic Greek atmosphere.
Santorini is intense – full of contrasts, crowds, colours and volcanic energy that cannot be mistaken for any other island.
