Amalfi Coast – Positano, Sorrento and the lemon-scented south of Italy

amalfi

The Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) is one of the most iconic regions of Italy. Spectacular cliffs, colourful towns perched above the sea and narrow roads winding through the rocks make this place a magnet for travellers from all over the world.

Positano – the symbol of the coast

Positano is one of the most photographed resorts in Italy.

  • steep buildings cascading down towards the sea,
  • narrow streets full of boutiques, art galleries and cafés,
  • distinctive pastel-coloured architecture.

In summer the town is extremely crowded. Finding a parking space can be difficult, and prices can reach around €20 per hour.

Positano beaches – narrow and mostly private

Beaches along the Amalfi Coast are pebbly and very narrow. Many of them are private and divided into paid sections. Despite the limited space, swimming in the deep-blue water remains one of the region’s main attractions.

Lemon Amalfi

Lemons are the symbol of the region. They are used to make lemonades, ice cream, cocktails and the famous limoncello. In many places you can order a sorbet served directly inside a hollowed-out lemon.

The coastal road – spectacular but demanding

Driving along the Costiera Amalfitana is an unforgettable experience:

  • breathtaking views of the cliffs and the Tyrrhenian Sea,
  • extremely narrow roads,
  • heavy traffic, honking and a very Italian driving style.

For many people it is one of the most scenic routes in Europe, but it requires full concentration.

Sorrento – the city of sirens

Both the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri are linked to mythology and the legend of sirens who lured sailors with their singing. In Sorrento, siren motifs appear in art, jewellery and souvenirs, highlighting the region’s deep connection with ancient stories.

Mount Vesuvius – Amalfi’s powerful neighbour

Not far from the Amalfi Coast, on the way to Naples airport, rises Mount Vesuvius – one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. Its presence is a reminder that the landscapes of southern Italy were shaped not only by the sea, but also by immense natural forces.

The Amalfi Coast is a place of intensity – of colours, scents, flavours and emotions. It enchants some and overwhelms others, but it certainly never leaves anyone indifferent.
