Albania – the most beautiful places: Ksamil, the Blue Eye and the Albanian Riviera

For many years Albania remained outside the main European tourist routes. In recent seasons, however, it has gained huge popularity thanks to social media and its spectacular landscapes. Today it is increasingly compared to Greece and Italy — and everything suggests that it will soon become one of the most sought-after holiday destinations in the Balkans.

You can also reach Albania from the Greek island of Corfu — the ferry to Saranda takes about 30 minutes.

Ksamil – Albanian islets and turquoise water

Ksamil is located in the south of the country, right by the Greek border. This area is famous for its small islets, light sand and very warm, crystal-clear water. In high season it can be crowded, but mornings and late afternoons reveal a much calmer side of this place.

The Blue Eye – Syri i Kaltër

The Blue Eye is one of the most extraordinary karst springs in the Balkans.

  • the water is crystal clear,
  • its colour shifts from light turquoise to deep navy blue,
  • divers have reached at least 50 metres — the true depth is still unknown,
  • in summer the water temperature is around 10°C.

Right next to the deep source there are shallow areas where the water reaches only to the knees, creating a striking contrast and enhancing the magic of this place.

Përmet and Benje – thermal springs in the mountains

Near the town of Përmet you will find the natural thermal springs of Benje.

  • the water contains sulphur — it is recommended to remove jewellery,
  • the pools lie among rocks and mountain scenery,
  • next to the springs there is a medieval stone bridge.

It is one of the best places in Albania for a peaceful, regenerating stop during a road trip.

It is a small, charming town where you can stay overnight at Funky Guest House & Bar (Funky Guest House & Adventures) — Instagram: @funky_guest_house_adventures — and try some adventures, such as horse riding.

I went into the mountains with a small group and guides — it was actually my first time on a horse. I didn’t think I could do it, but I did. I highly recommend it even if you are a beginner. Everything was well organised; my horse didn’t always listen to me, but it definitely knew what it was doing and where to go 🙂

The Albanian Riviera and Dhërmi

The Albanian Riviera stretches along the south-western coast of the country. Dhërmi is one of its most famous towns — bright cliffs, pebbly beaches and intensely blue water create a landscape often compared to southern Italy.

Gjipe Beach

Gjipe is one of the most beautiful yet hardest-to-reach beaches in Albania. A narrow gorge and a hiking path lead to it, which helps it retain a wilder character — even in high season it is quieter than popular resorts.

Jale Beach and Aquarium Bay

Jale is a bright, pebbly beach with excellent swimming conditions. Nearby is the small Aquarium Bay, known for its exceptionally clear water — perfect for snorkelling.

Empire Hotel:

Albania is a destination that combines wild nature, crystal-clear sea and still relatively low mass tourism. It is worth seeing it now — before it becomes another fully commercialised gem of southern Europe.
