Paragliding over Ölüdeniz – a flight from Mount Babadağ

Lot paralotnią w tandemie, Oludeniz, Turcja

Ölüdeniz in Turkey is famous for one of the most spectacular attractions — paragliding. It is said to be one of the best places in the world to fly: turquoise lagoons, islands, long beaches and mountains dropping straight into the sea. Flights take off from Mount Babadağ (1,969 m above sea level) and land on the beach in Ölüdeniz.

There are many companies offering tandem flights. Prices usually range between 80–150 euros per person, and you pay extra for photos and videos (around 30–60 euros). The price includes the ride up to Babadağ and insurance.

A sky full of colours

Sitting on the beach in Ölüdeniz, from early morning until sunset, you can watch dozens of colourful paragliders floating over the bay. The view is beautiful and very tempting… until you realise that in a moment you will have to run towards a cliff nearly 2,000 metres high.

An extra tip for those who feel stressed about the flight: you can take the chairlift up to Babadağ first, just to get used to the height and see what the place looks like.

In the video below you can see the take-off, the run and the leap into almost 2,000 metres of empty space — I admit this was the worst moment for me, because the first run did not work out. The parachute didn’t catch the wind and we stopped abruptly, and I almost fell over. I don’t know why it happens, but only the second attempt was successful. The flight itself is beautiful, because you focus on the views rather than on how high above the ground you are. Funny enough, I was afraid to let go of the lines and held on like a “drowning person clutching at a straw” — later I even had sore muscles 🙂

Air acrobatics

The paragliding instructor will ask whether you want to do some acrobatics in the air or not. You can start with something gentle and see if you like it.

Landing on the beach

The landing takes place on a designated strip on the beach. Sometimes tourists walk there without noticing the signs, but usually there are staff members helping to slow you down — although it is not always necessary.

Is it worth it?

Short answer: paragliding is both terrifying and fascinating at the same time.
If you dream of flying or want to face your fear of heights, this is a perfect way to do it — much gentler than bungee jumping or skydiving.

Good luck — and courage!
