Montenegro – the most beautiful places: Kotor, Durmitor, Sveti Stefan and the Prokletije Mountains

Montenegro

Montenegro is a small country with an extraordinary diversity of landscapes, where in a short time you can travel from high mountains to the turquoise Adriatic coast. The rocky massifs of Durmitor and the Prokletije Mountains contrast with the warm sea, peaceful bays and the winding streets of old towns such as Kotor and Budva. It is a place where nature and history intertwine almost at every step.

Among the most recognisable landmarks of Montenegro are the iconic Sveti Stefan, the island of St. Nikola, the vast area of Lake Skadar, as well as scenic roads running through the mountains and along the coast. In recent years the country has changed a lot — the road infrastructure has become modern and safer, and many new luxury hotels have appeared. At the same time, Montenegro has preserved its unique character — a slower rhythm of life, wild nature and small details that build the atmosphere, such as cats basking in the sun on the walls of old towns.

Below you will find the most beautiful and best-known places in Montenegro — mountains, lakes, coastline and historic cities that are worth seeing when travelling around this country.

Kotor

The old town of Kotor is truly special — you can wander for hours through its narrow streets, and then climb the stairs up to the old Fortress of St. John (San Giovanni). The entrance and the climb of over a thousand steps costs around 8 euros, but it is worth it if you want to see the city, the bay and the surroundings from above.

While staying in Kotor you can also visit nearby Lustica Bay and the beaches on the peninsula.

The Kotor Serpentines – the road from Kotor to Lovćen

Above the Bay of Kotor there is a spectacular serpentine road with a beautiful panoramic view:

A perfect place to watch sunsets:

Budva and Stari Grad (Old Town)

Budva is a very touristy town, but it also has an interesting old town and nearby beaches. From Budva you can also take a boat taxi to the island often called “Hawaii”, although its real name is Sveti Nikola. In the video below you can see what it looks like:

Sveti Stefan

For many years Sveti Stefan functioned as an exclusive hotel complex accessible only to guests. After the pandemic the property remains closed and information about its reopening is unclear. The peninsula itself can only be admired from the outside, while the beaches on both sides are accessible to visitors. The beach on the right side is private and paid, while on the left there is a public beach offering the classic panoramic view of Sveti Stefan.

Lake Skadar

This is a unique lake with winding meanders and lush greenery in summer. You can take a boat ride among water lilies, watch birds, even try water chestnuts, and also swim — although the water is dark and full of vegetation, algae and fish.

Prokletije Mountains – the Accursed Mountains

A very little-known destination. Locals told us they were surprised to see us there. Tourists usually prefer the Durmitor Mountains, although in my opinion Prokletije are just as breathtaking. This area lies on the border with Albania and Kosovo. The photo below was taken on the Volušnica route:

Durmitor National Park

Durmitor is one of the most impressive national parks in Montenegro — harsh mountain landscapes, glacial lakes and deep canyons create a completely different face of the country compared to the Adriatic coast. One of its symbols is the bridge over the Tara River, suspended above one of the deepest canyons in Europe, offering spectacular views of the valley and surrounding mountains.

Mount Prutaš – 2393 m

Prutaš is less popular than Bobotov Kuk, but just as interesting — its characteristic wall is built from vertical rock stripes that make it stand out among other Durmitor peaks:

Meandrice

This place is not exactly on the way — you need to drive quite a distance and it is not very visible from above, but if you love discovering hidden spots, it is worth going there and taking photos or drone videos:

Lovćen National Park

It is famous for its mausoleum and the panoramic view of the area, but if this is not particularly interesting for you, you can also go hiking:
