Why Southern Germany and Austria?
This region combines Alpine landscapes, historic towns, glacial lakes and some of the most beautiful hiking routes in Europe. It’s perfect both for active travel and for relaxed sightseeing.

October is also Oktoberfest season in Munich.
Lichtenstein (Baden-Württemberg) – Castle & Scenic Trails
This is not the principality, but Lichtenstein Castle on the Swabian Jura.
What to do:
- walk to scenic viewpoints along the cliff edges,
- visit the castle (guided tours only),
- short hikes around Honau.
Getting there: by car from Reutlingen / Tübingen
Time needed: 2–3 hours
Historic Stud Farms – the Region’s Heritage
Southern Germany is home to historic stud farms dating back to the 16th century (e.g. around Marbach).
You can visit:
- breeding stables,
- training grounds,
- small equestrian museums.
Eibsee – Lake beneath Zugspitze
One of the most beautiful lakes in Bavaria.
Why it’s worth it:
- turquoise, crystal-clear water,
- full loop around the lake – about 7 km,
- swimming in summer and photo opportunities all year round.

Walking time: about 2 hours
Neuschwanstein – Germany’s Most Famous Castle
The Bavarian icon and the inspiration for Disney castles.
Tips:
- book tickets online in advance,
- best photos from Marienbrücke bridge,
- arrive early in the morning.
Time needed: 3–4 hours
Schwarzwald – Quieter Trails
The Black Forest is a great alternative to the crowded Alps.
What it offers:
- long, gentle hiking routes,
- dense forests and small villages,
- excellent conditions for autumn hikes.
Austria – Reither Spitze & Innsbruck
Reither Spitze (Tyrol)
A popular viewpoint summit in the Karwendel Alps.
- altitude: 2,374 m,
- medium difficulty,
- panoramic views over Innsbruck and the Inn Valley.
Ascent time: 4–5 hours
Innsbruck
The capital of Tyrol – a perfect base.
Don’t miss:
- the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl),
- Nordkette cable car straight from the city centre,
- the old town.
Oktoberfest – if You Travel in October
The world’s largest beer festival takes place in Munich from late September to early October.
Tips:
- book accommodation months in advance,
- the city is extremely crowded on weekends,
- short visits are possible without entering the tents.
